Wednesday morning, January 10, 2018. U.S. Immigration agents descended on close to a hundred 7-Eleven locations across the country demanding paperwork and arresting unauthorized workers. In total, twenty-one illegal workers were arrested. The Trump administration following the President’s “Buy American and Hire American” Executive Order is expanding worksite enforcement with the goal of opening up more jobs opportunities for Americans. It is believed that by preventing employers from hiring illegal workers, legal workers will have more job options and possibly even higher wages.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans on conducting more raids this year and has called for hiring 10,000 additional ICE officers and 300 Federal prosecutors. Their investigations won’t be directed at any specific industry or company, making all employers equally at risk. ICE Deputy Director Thomas D. Homan stated “Today’s actions send a strong message to U.S. businesses that hire and employ an illegal workforce: ICE will enforce the law, and if you are found to be breaking the law, you will be held accountable… ICE will continue its efforts to protect jobs for American workers by eliminating unfair competitive advantages for companies that exploit illegal immigration.”

When conducting a raid or investigation, ICE agents inspect Form I-9 records to make sure the employer is not knowingly hiring illegal workers, as well as checking compliance with Form I-9 requirements and the validity of documents. There are many financial penalties for small mistakes in the Form I-9 as well as criminal sanctions when an employer is found to be continually hiring illegal workers.

Now is the time to make sure you are compliant with all immigration laws and follow correct procedures when filling out Form I-9. It is also essential that employers are prepared to handle a ICE visit or audit correctly. When it comes to Form I-9, ApplicantSafe has you covered.
